The Game Grumps
Game grumps used to be comfort content for me for a long time, they have hours and hours of gameplay that's mostly well made and we'll edited from the past few years. I loved the 10 minute power hour too. After shit continued to come out about Dan, I lost whatever little enthusiasm I had left for their future. As part of the game's marketing Game Grumps and Fantastic Passion have played up a sort of alternate history surrounding the game. In that history, Soviet Jump Game is, in fact, the "world's first battle royale" and was developed in Russia for the Dendy. The game was eventually canceled before, decades later, being rediscovered by the Game Grumps. Here are 5 things we learned about the game and its development process. And his thought was the last battle royale would be the first battle royale, which is like an old retro platforming game And the more that he thought about it, the more he had this idea of like, 'Oh, what if it was like an old retro game and kind of had this bootleg aesthetic to it.
That it was like a game made in Russia as a bootleg game. We've all seen those sorts of games from China, where it's like in-one cartridges, and stuff like that. And so I wanted to make a game like that. I would want to play this. And so we all started working together on the game.
Now we have this game that's sort of like a love letter to classic, retro platformers fused with the modern battle royale game mechanics. As for just what drew them to battle royale as a genre, Fantastic Passion developer Glunt explained exploring the concept came in part from just how popular that type of game has become, due to things like Fortnite.
Like, where's the end of this? What is the point at which it's over? And we're like, okay, we've reached every genre. Battle royale's dead. And the kind of end of it was Tetris and an old school platformer. And then, as we started joking around about it, Tetris 99 came out. We were like, 'Wow, they really did it. That was the craziest part. It was fucking good! From there, Glunt worked on the game with an idea of having something 2D with the battle royale constraints of a closing ring.
This also led to looking at how to make the game easily playable and able to fit into the lives of its players. Explaining what drew him to the game, Arin Hanson from Game Grumps said, "I thought the concept was brilliant, and yeah, just working with the team and sort of figuring out the narrative [and] lore behind Soviet Jump Game It was a super fun concept.
Then as the game was getting developed, the game itself is just so much fun. And it was so nice seeing all the new additions every time. It was like, 'Ah, sick! Because they were literally making updates -- at some point it was like every day there was updates. While Hanson has previously offered up critiques of games on both his Egoraptor channel and Game Grumps, he generally wanted to avoid interfering with the vision of those making the game.
He explained, "As much as it's easy to be like, 'This game needs to be this way and that would be better,' it's another thing to actually develop it and make it and have it be your passion and the goal behind it be a certain way. So for me to come in and be very particular about how something would be, I felt wasn't super helpful to the process.
And then also, I've never actually made a game to completion. Thom is somebody who's made quite a successful and quite good game to completion. I can come in and be like, 'These are my thoughts on certain things,' but at the end of the day, I leave it up to the team to make those sorts of decisions to put into the game.
Hanson then explained the Game Grumps rejected a number of pitch ideas after Dream Daddy. However, they liked Soviet Jump Game 's concept and felt it was "already ready to be made into a game. In order to further communicate the game's "bootleg" vibe, Soviet Jump Game prominently features glitches in its aesthetic, like one would find in a game such as Axiom Verge.
However, this actually required the team to create a shader and various ambient effects, while paying attention to make sure no areas with necessary would be obscured by the choice. This is readily apparent when a player dies, as a glitch blasts out and into pillars to indicate where people may be dying more frequently on the map. Glunt explained how this choice to have glitches was informed by the game's backstory, saying, "If this game was made in for the Dendy, [the developers] were kind of building up to release way too ambitious They wanted the death effects to be rad.
So they were like, let's just put more effects in and more effects in, and the cart couldn't handle it. So when you kill someone, it just freaks the screen out for a second. That was kind of the thought behind it. Batha added, "Yeah, we have some fun back lore for the game that was mostly just internal just for stylistic consistency while we were working on it.
And the game being too ambitious for the cartridge it was loaded onto was a big part of that, and that's where those glitches came from. While Soviet Jump Game does have an extensive backstory, there's much that hasn't necessarily been said or revealed about that game that nonetheless informs the release. According to Glunt, the fictional Soviet Jump Game was "a historical teaching tool in the Soviet Union" used to teach youth real history.
However, the addition of such characters as Labor Ranger and Green Bean, who are versions of Japan's Power Rangers and Godzilla, respectively, are meant to teach Soviet youth about different cultures. Over the last decade, there has been something of a resurgence of games using pixel art and invoking a nostalgic feel whether through concept or mechanics.
In part, this has been made possible by the increasing prevalence of indie games and indie developers. As a game that's fake backstory has it being an actual retro, bootleg game, Soviet Jump Game will invoke nostalgia for those who played platformers in the early days of the medium. It connects you to a feeling, and that feeling is kind of like when your life was different.
So much of our tastes, so many of our impressions, were made as children. When I grew up, this wasn't an art style. This was just how games looked. And that's kind of been cemented into my head. Glunt then noted how, in the early s, many games started pushing away from the pixel art aesthetic, saying, "I would always be like, 'Man, why are we changing this?
It doesn't look like a video game anymore. Batha agreed that there was a phase in which 3D started becoming more dominant in video game creations. However, there's much the game industry has learned about design in the last twenty years that never had a chance to be applied to projects at the time.
He then noted there's a charm in having something being a bit jankier or bootlegged, echoing comments from Glunt earlier in the roundtable. A big part of Soviet Jump Game is the power-ups, which are integral to surviving and beating opponents.
While the power-ups in the game are generally well balanced, that wasn't always the case. Additionally, there's just other ideas for power ups that had to get changed or nerfed, just in general So there's a lot of challenges around how to make a platformer feel good over the web.
And we were finding issues with projectiles. If you had to land on top of them, like with a Bullet Bill or something like that, there would be times where it looks like you would land on it.
And then the server would be like, 'No, you didn't,' and it would hurt you. Initially, the tank power up was something where you could jump off of it if you were a skilled player. But due to just latency and all the predictions we were doing, it became best just to make it a pain ball if you ever touch it Initially, you would have to swing [the baseball bat] yourself and try to hit projectiles back at other players.
But through building and testing, we realized let's just have the player hold it and when a projectile hits them, it'll just auto-swing the bat to give them one free [protection]. Batha and Glunt then noted that, while the formidable duck egg power-up had not changed much since the beginning, Fantastic Passion did make it harder in terms of timing to keep people from staying in the air for too long.
There were also a number of tweaks to the disguise block to make it less annoying and more fun. While Soviet Jump Game already has 40 unique characters and over skins, some of which are available through various content packs for the game.
Glunt explained the team focused on covering its bases with the early rounds of characters, allowing for later additions to fill in gaps or just be plain weird. However, the currently available characters are far from the only ones the game will have. Instead, Batha admitted the team actually has a spreadsheet with various ideas for the future, though they did not disclose any of those ideas during the roundtable.
